General Motors fait des efforts, nous devons le reconnaître. Mais malheureusement pour les ventes du géant américain, la Colorado souffre d’un complexe d’infériorité pleinement justifié. En revanche, cette camionnette offre de multiples configurations qui devraient intéresser des acheteurs qui ne veulent pas s’embourber d’une camionnette pleine grandeur. Par exemple, GM offre dorénavant un moteur V8 qui contraste drôlement avec les 4-cylindres et 5-cylindres anémiques qui, il y a à peine un an, étaient les seuls disponibles. C’est bien dommage, car il semble que ce ne soit pas suffisant…

Carrosserie

La carcasse de la Colorado n’inspire guère confiance pour celui qui recherche la masculinité. Elle affiche plutôt un air frêle et timide. Trois choix de cabines s’offrent à vous, en version à deux ou à quatre roues motrices : cabine classique, allongée et multiplace. Outre la calandre Chevrolet qui a de la gueule, la silhouette de la Colorado est franchement triste à mourir. Elle ne se distingue guère de la concurrence. Regardez un modèle à cabine classique et essayez de l’imaginer au boulot ! La cabine multiplace lui donne un peu de panache, mais elle exige la caisse courte.

Habitacle

La Colorado possède un intérieur bien conçu avec une planche de bord solide et bien intégrée. Les sièges sont durs, et le confort pourrait être mieux. La cabine multiplace procure un espace plus que respectable pour des occupants éventuels à l’arrière. Si vous souhaitez y loger votre petite famille pour des excursions, cette option se révèle indispensable. En revanche, il faudra mettre la main dans votre poche. Un modèle à grande cabine, équipé convenablement, se vendre 40 000 dollars, environ. C’est beaucoup demandé pour une camionnette de ce gabarit, d’autant plus qu’à ce prix, elle joue dans les platebandes de la camionnette pleine grandeur ! Si l’intérieur des portes a été fabriqué à la sauvette et avec des matériaux de piètre qualité, le reste de l’habitacle se révèle de conception acceptable.

Mécanique

Afin de ne pas perdre la face devant la concurrence, GM a décidé d’offrir le V8 Vortec de 5,3 litres qui développent 320 chevaux. À la bonne heure ! Bien entendu, vous visiterez plus souvent votre ami pompiste si votre Colorado est muni de cet engin, mais il fournit une puissance nettement adéquate pour les capacités de la camionnette. En revanche, les moteurs à 4 et à 5 cylindres sont creux et manquent de souffle. À défaut d’offrir un gros V8 assoiffé, un bon V6 aurait pu faire l’affaire. Vous avez également le choix de la suspension, selon vos goûts et besoins. La suspension sport ou tout-terrain offrira plus de stabilité et plus de rigidité si vous visitez des endroits peu hospitaliers, mais elle vous en fera voir de toutes les couleurs sur la route.

Comportement

A priori, la Colorado n’est pas la camionnette intermédiaire la plus confortable. Si vous optez pour la configuration minimale, cabine classique et moteur à 4 cylindres, vous filerez à vive allure, mais seulement si la Colorado a le ventre vide. En revanche, la tenue de route de la petite camionnette vous donnera des sueurs froides et vous brassera l’anatomie. Ce n’est pas aussi terrifiant qu’à bord de la Ford Ranger, un minichar allégorique archaïque avec petite caisse, mais il faut bien le mentionner. La cabine multiplace procure une douceur de roulement qui fait du bien quand on compare les deux modèles. Il faut s’attendre à un important roulis en virage, surtout si la Colorado est munie de la suspension ordinaire.

Conclusion

Inchangée depuis 2004, la Colorado aurait besoin d’être revue et corrigée pour relancer le processus de vente. Des moteurs inadéquats, une suspension peu convaincante, un prix plus ou moins concurrentiel, voilà autant d’arguments négatifs qui forcent l’acheteur à regarder ailleurs. Du côté de Toyota, on offre une camionnette mieux conçue, moderne, avec un moteur robuste et bien adapté. Le choix n’est pas difficile à faire.
